Digitized and Automated Production Processes with 5G
Injection molding machine manufacturer Arburg is the first customer to use Telekom’s new product “Campus Network M with Industrial Frequencies.” Discover how the campus network works and how it serves as a foundation for employees’ IoT ideas through this real-world example.
Private 5G Campus Network by Telekom for RTL Deutschland
Telekom has installed a private 5G campus network for RTL Deutschland, which went live just in time for the UEFA Euro 2024. With the “Campus Network Private” business solution, RTL becomes the first media company in Germany to equip its production studios with a dedicated 5G Standalone (5G SA) network.
This makes TV production even more flexible: the solution enables the use of wireless cameras both inside and outside the studios, offering greater flexibility for future broadcast operations.
The in-house campus network provides a customized infrastructure tailored for high performance and dynamic environments. The short data paths of the standalone 5G architecture support data-intensive applications with ultra-low latency in the millisecond range. In addition to wireless cameras, the network will also support wireless microphones, wireless intercom systems, and dedicated internet access in the future.
Connected Container Terminals: Maximum 5G Performance for Digital Logistics Application
5G for the digitalization of port logistics: Europe’s leading independent container terminal operator, EUROGATE, relies on Deutsche Telekom’s hybrid 5G campus networks. At the ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven, the “Campus Network L” business solution improves mobile connectivity at container terminals.
This enables the operator to use digital logistics applications even more securely and flexibly – with dedicated bandwidth, high availability, and full 5G performance. A hybrid campus network is deployed, meaning that in addition to Telekom’s public mobile network, private 5G industrial frequencies in the 3.7 to 3.8 gigahertz (GHz) range are used for critical data transmission – for example, to further digitalize handling processes or to tightly integrate cargo handling equipment with control and process management systems.
Industrial Digitalization in Actio
From innovation to production at top speed: At the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science (WvSC) in Berlin, technologies such as artificial intelligence, voice control, and augmented reality are being made ready for real-world use in actual production environments.
With high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and maximum availability, Telekom’s 5G campus network enables innovative, industry-driven applications – such as autonomous mobile robots for production and logistics.
Efficient Paper Production Thanks to 5G Campus Network
Deutsche Telekom has implemented a 5G campus network for Hamburger Containerboard in Spremberg to digitally connect and optimize paper production. The network enhances communication between machines, processes, data, and employees. The deployment was supported by Bayerische Funknetz GmbH.
Initial use cases include digital inventory, logistics, IoT sensor technology, and mobile apps. The campus network spans an area equivalent to 50 football fields and covers eight outdoor locations and 116 indoor antennas. The 5G standalone technology provides high security, low latency, and supports network slicing.
The entire infrastructure operates independently from the public mobile network, ensuring data privacy and full control. With the 5G campus network, Hamburger Containerboard is increasing both efficiency and competitiveness.
Vineyards Get a Boost from 5G-Enabled Robots
The Moselle Valley is renowned for its steep vineyards and rich winemaking tradition. However, labor shortages and safety risks make vineyard management increasingly challenging. The “Smarter Vineyard” project leverages 5G technology and automation to support winemakers. A 5G-enabled robot performs tasks such as soil cultivation and leaf removal. Cameras collect data on vine health, pest infestation, and ripening conditions, which are processed centrally.
The private 5G network operates on industrial frequencies and functions independently of the public mobile network. In the future, the robot and network will be able to move from vineyard to vineyard. The entire operation is emission-free. The project is coordinated by the University of Koblenz and supported by research and industry partners. The goal is to help viticulture adapt to climate change and labor shortages.
A 5G Campus Network can be based either on private or public mobile infrastructure installed directly on the company’s premises. Base stations and antennas establish a connection that enables secure, fast, and scalable low-latency communication for connected devices and machinery.
Public network | Hybrid network | Private network |

With our public 5G network, we offer companies an instantly available, cost-effective, and flexible connectivity solution. Without needing to build their own infrastructure, businesses can immediately access the powerful 5G network – ideal for mobile applications or distributed sites. Employees, customers, and suppliers can use tablets and smartphones seamlessly and enjoy the best possible reception. | The hybrid model combines the best of both worlds: companies get a dedicated private 5G network for mission-critical IoT devices, such as industrial robots, autonomous vehicles, or connected sensors. Less sensitive applications, on the other hand, run via our public 5G network. This setup ensures that essential systems benefit from guaranteed bandwidth and low latency, while mobile staff or guests can continue using the public network. | A private 5G campus network is an exclusive, locally operated network solution that is only accessible to a specific company or organization. It offers maximum security, guaranteed network resources, and can be fully tailored to the company’s individual requirements. Ideal for Industry 4.0, automation, or the transmission of highly sensitive data. |
Various models are available for 5G Campus Networks: purely private campus networks use the so-called industrial frequency in the 3.7–3.8 GHz range. Hybrid campus networks or those based on public mobile infrastructure (“slicing”) can additionally leverage public frequencies.
A 5G Campus Network is suitable for deployment on company premises in a wide range of industries, such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and general industry. Due to its reliable connectivity, machines can be seamlessly interconnected, real-time analyses can be performed, and automation processes can be carried out securely.
Campus networks based on public mobile infrastructure are available starting from €200 per month. Costs for hybrid or private campus networks can vary significantly, as they largely depend on infrastructure setup expenses and individual SLA requirements.
A 5G Campus Network is built on top-tier security standards with end-to-end encryption, dedicated networks, and strict access controls. User data can be separated locally, minimizing security risks and ensuring data integrity.
