How SELECT AG remains competitive with data from the cloud

From brake wear to service requirements: To service cars more efficiently, SELECT AG provides independent workshops with vehicle information from the cloud.

Thanks to this networking and evaluation, independent workshops that work with us know exactly when their customers need to carry out which repairs and can recommend fitting measures.

Daniel Trost, Chief Digital Officer SELECT AG

Challenge

Challenge

Since 2018, new cars must be equipped with a SIM card that can send an emergency signal in the case of an accident. These cards can also provide manufacturers with valuable vehicle data that they can use to recommend maintenance work at authorized workshops, even before damage or wear is audible or visible. But the more than 21,000 independent workshops in Germany do not have access to this vehicle data and therefore cannot offer services such as predictive, data-based maintenance.

Solution

Solution

SELECT AG offers its customers the opportunity to network cars via an on-board diagnostic adapter and a SIM card. In the case of newer vehicles, an existing car connection can be used. Independent workshops can retrieve telemetry data centrally via an IoT platform, which had been developed by Telekom's digitization for SELECT AG, to store and analyse all the data.

Independent workshops now know when an inspection or repair is due for which customer. Through the connection to the cloud platform, the driver quickly receives a recommendation for action. This way, workshops can increase customer loyalty and offer better and faster service. They can service cars in a predictive manner and always have spare parts on site in time to reduce outages.

BMW speeds up its production using the IoT Service Button

Fitters on the production line at the BMW plant in Leipzig can use a button connected via NarrowBand IoT to reorder materials in just a few seconds.

We can imagine using these devices in combination with automated transport systems or robotics applications in the future.

Sarah Fink, Project Manager Mobile Devices, BMW Group

Challenge

Challenge

When fitters in the Leipzig BMW plant needed to reorder materials, they had to interrupt their task and call the colleagues in the warehouse. This delayed production, as it could take several minutes for the employee in the warehouse to note all the required materials over the phone.

Solution

Solution

BMW installed an IoT Service Button from Deutsche Telekom on every rack with materials. A fitter can press this button when stocks of a component are running low. When the button is pressed, an order is sent via the NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) mobile standard, notifying the colleagues in the warehouse who immediately begin to restock the missing materials.

Customer benefits

Customer benefit

The digital button reduces the duration of the ordering process from several minutes to just a single second. In addition, the inventory lists in the storage system are always kept up to date with the digital solution. The Service Button can easily be installed anywhere as complex WLAN or Bluetooth systems are not required.
