Connected environmental and maritime data for Patras

In Patras, Greece, Libelium brings environmental and maritime data together on the iris360 platform. IoT sensors and AI provide real-time insights into air and water quality as well as activities in the port – supporting more informed environmental and urban management.

“True urban leadership lies in balancing economic growth with environmental preservation. By integrating IoT and AI into the port’s heartbeat, Patras is safeguarding both the viability of its economy and the natural heritage of its coastline—the primary driver of that wealth.”

Challenge

As a major urban hub and port in Western Greece, Patras faces several environmental challenges. Maritime traffic in the Gulf of Patras, urban and agricultural runoff, and high tourism volumes place pressure on the coastal environment and water resources. The city needed a proactive and preventative approach to safeguard the environment while maintaining its role as a major transport hub and tourism destination.

Solution

Distributor Optocore and partner Sammy implemented a comprehensive monitoring ecosystem based on Libelium’s iris360 platform. IoT sensors monitor gaseous pollutants, particulate matter, noise, meteorological data and physicochemical water parameters such as pH, turbidity and salinity. A second subsystem uses AI and computer vision to support vessel tracking and berth management in the marina. The data from both systems is centralized in iris360 and made available through map-based visualization, a mobile app for citizens and tourists, and automated statistical reporting. Libelium One and Smart Spot devices transmit their data via 4G using integrated Deutsche Telekom SIM cards.

Customer benefits

The solution provides Patras with a strategic and preventative tool for environmental monitoring and long-term urban planning. Real-time monitoring of bathing water quality supports public health, while direct access to environmental data increases transparency and citizen engagement. In the marina, AI-based vessel tracking supports more efficient berth management. By bringing environmental and maritime data together on one platform, iris360 helps turn data into actionable insights across urban and port operations.
