Unlike conventional SIM cards, IoT SIM cards typically connect to specific mobile networks tailored to their use case. In addition to 2G, 4G, and 5G, this also includes specialized networks for IoT devices, such as LTE-M and Narrowband IoT.
Visually, IoT SIMs and standard SIM cards may look identical – plastic cards with embedded chips in Mini, Micro, or Nano formats. However, because IoT devices must often operate reliably under harsh environmental conditions for many years, plug-in IoT SIMs are also available as robust industrial or high-end variants. These are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and offer double or even triple the lifespan of regular SIM cards.
Yes. Integrating an IoT SIM card requires compatible hardware and firmware. The device must support mobile standards such as NB-IoT, LTE-M, or 5G to ensure stable connectivity. Depending on the use case, a standard SIM, eSIM, or compact nuSIM may be appropriate. The hardware should be rugged (e.g., shock-resistant and temperature-tolerant), and the firmware must support secure communication protocols (like TLS or VPN) and energy-saving features such as PSM or eDRX – especially in battery-powered devices.
Deutsche Telekom’s IoT SIM cards provide a high level of security, built on proven 3GPP security standards. These include strong encryption, mutual authentication, and – if needed – secure IP-VPN connections. SIMs and connectivity can be centrally managed via the M2M Service Portal 3.0, which allows for usage monitoring, access control, and fraud detection. In addition, an independent DEKRA-certified security assessment ensures compliance with strict data protection and security standards.
Our IoT Business Tariff portfolio offers the right solution for every need: frompreconfigured standard and trial tariffs to customized offers with comprehensive service and individual consulting. We’re happy to provide you with a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your project.
Our IoT SIM cards work globally – supported by our own mobile networks (e.g., in Germany and the U.S.) and roaming agreements with over 600 partner networks around the world. Suitable IoT tariffs enable the implementation of global IoT use cases – reliably and with cost certainty.
For mobile standards like NB-IoT, LTE-M, or 5G, worldwide availability is exceptionally high – thanks to our own networks and partner networks and can be further extended through satellite connectivity, for example to cover particularly remote regions.
Yes. Our unique global SIM profile is ideal for international IoT projects. If needed, local SIM profiles can also be provided to meet country-specific regulatory requirements.
