From smart bell control to an IoT platform for churches

Churches are historic buildings with high energy consumption. smartcustos connects bells, heating, air conditioning, ventilation and processes via the IoT – ensuring efficient operation across multiple sites.

“With Telekom’s IoT infrastructure, we can deploy our solution reliably and scalably in churches. This enables bells, heating, air conditioning, ventilation and operational processes to be intelligently connected – without the need for complex on-site IT projects.”

Challenge

Churches are large, often historic buildings that are energy-intensive. At the same time, they are used for a variety of purposes – for church services, rehearsals, concerts or funeral services. In day-to-day operations, this requires a great deal of coordination: heating, bells, ventilation, lighting and access points all need to be managed together. With limited resources and multiple sites, this can quickly become a complex task. Temperature and humidity also affect organs, works of art and the building’s structure.

Solution

smartcustos uses the Adiutor Hub to connect key functions in church buildings via an IoT platform. The starting point is calendar-based bell control. A single calendar entry now also controls heating, air conditioning, ventilation, lighting and time-limited access for external service providers. Existing heating systems can be integrated via retrofitting. The adaptive heating model utilises appointments, weather and building data. Sensors measure temperature and humidity, trigger alarms and record operating times and the status of the heating, windows and ventilation systems. Telekom provides secure mobile connectivity and a scalable IoT infrastructure for this purpose. This allows applications to be managed centrally and solutions to be easily rolled out to additional sites.

Customer benefits

Processes are automated, reducing the need for manual work – particularly where there are several churches and limited staff resources. Heating energy is used more efficiently, bringing down costs. Climate data and humidity alarms provide transparency and help to protect the building structure, the organ and the furnishings. External parties can be securely integrated, processes can be coordinated more easily, and buildings can be managed more efficiently.
