As Telekom, we always aim to provide our customers with the best network. To continue doing so, we plan to phase out our 2G network in the summer of 2028. This will pave the way for more modern and faster technologies. The frequencies that are freed up will be used to enhance more advanced technologies such as 4G and 5G.
Good to know: Areas currently covered only by 2G, but not 4G, are being upgraded to 4G/5G as part of ongoing network modernization efforts. Following the 2G shutdown, the freed-up 2G frequencies will be repurposed to support the new technologies, making the network even faster and more efficient.
Impact on your mobile phones, IoT devices, and M2M communication
The 2G network has long served as a reliable foundation for many IoT and M2M applications. However, with its shutdown, the seamless communication of these devices can no longer be guaranteed unless they are transitioned to alternative technologies. Modern technologies like NB-IoT and LTE-M offer a future-proof alternative, well-suited for applications in remote regions and hard-to-reach environments.
What to do next regarding your migration
To ensure that your IoT solutions continue to function reliably after the 2G network shutdown, we recommend the following steps:
Review your device inventory: Check which of your mobile phones and IoT devices currently rely on the 2G network and will be affected by the shutdown.
Transition to modern wireless technologies: Start planning early to migrate your solutions to 4G, 5G, or specialized IoT network technologies like NB-IoT or LTE-M.
Procure new devices: If upgrades are not possible, we recommend procuring new devices that support 4G/5G, LTE-M, or NB-IoT in a timely manner. Particularly for devices or systems with long service cycles, planning ahead can make the replacement process significantly more cost-effective.
