Drone logistics: A reliable network for critical deliveries

The Dortmund-based start-up Morpheus Logistik transports time-sensitive goods by drone. The drones can be controlled reliably via Deutsche Telekom’s IoT network.

“In emergency situations, particularly in healthcare, every minute often counts. That’s why it was crucial for us to find a provider with absolutely reliable network coverage.”

Lukas Ostermann, Head of Research & Development at Morpheus Logistik

Challenge

Urgently needed spare parts, laboratory samples or medicines must reach their destination as quickly as possible. Morpheus Logistik speeds up such deliveries using networked drones, which are highly automated and can even fly over traffic jams in low-altitude airspace. The control centre in Dortmund requires a stable mobile network connection at all times for position data, video feeds and optional interventions in the control system. This connectivity must function reliably even over longer distances, in cities or in regions with variable network coverage. Furthermore, regulatory safety requirements mandate a secure fallback solution.

Solution

Deutsche Telekom is providing Morpheus with an IoT connectivity solution featuring optimal network coverage, redundant communication channels and a flexible data plan. A special network profile ensures that the drones remain stably connected to the mobile network cell whilst in flight. For redundancy, Morpheus uses two IoT SIM cards from Telekom: one for data and a second connection to control the drone in an emergency.

Customer benefits

Morpheus can reliably control its drones outside of direct line of sight and meet the regulatory requirements for routine operations. The company reliably serves its customers, such as hospitals, laboratories and industrial firms, significantly reduces transport times and keeps a close eye on its own operating costs through scalable pricing plans. Thanks to Telekom’s national roaming, the drones are connected to the best available network at all times.
