According to the US animal welfare organization American Humane Society, one in three pets goes missing at least once in their lifetime. To prevent dogs from getting lost during walks, a market for microchips and GPS trackers has developed. At the same time, pet owners want more insights into their four-legged friends' health. The startup SATELLAI has therefore developed smart GPS collars that serve both needs. However, for its planned expansion into Europe and the US, the startup needed reliable, global cellular connectivity.
The SATELLAI collars use Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for precise location tracking. "GPS works everywhere, but the truly intelligent functions only emerge through connectivity," says David Teaster, Product Marketing Director at SATELLAI. The solution is designed to not only locate pets, but to understand their behavior and health over time. Therefore sensors in the collar continuously capture movement patterns, activity times, and rest periods of the dogs. This data is transmitted via cellular network to the SATELLAI cloud.
Here, the core of SATELLAI’s solution comes into play: PetSense AI, an AI system that analyzes the daily activity patterns and builds a behavioral baseline for each dog. It detects meaningful deviations from normal behavior over time, such as unusual movement patterns that could indicate health problems, or changed rest patterns that signal stress.
Depending on the model, dog owners can also define virtual safety zones. If the dog leaves these areas, the system sends a notification to the owner's smartphone. Through two-way audio, they can also speak to their pet or give commands. Depending on the model, the collars offer up to 15 days of battery life and are waterproof to IP68 standard.
To support its international ambitions, SATELLAI is relying on Deutsche Telekom's global IoT network. The partnership solves a central problem for the company: Instead of having to conclude separate contracts with local cellular providers in each country, SATELLAI, headquartered in Shenzhen, gains access to a global network. Telekom operates its own cellular networks and cooperates with more than 600 partners worldwide.
SATELLAI's long-term vision extends beyond GPS tracking: The company is building PetSense AI into a global preventive pet health data platform. In the future, the system aims to deliver individualized recommendations for each pet – from activity analysis and nutrition guidance to early warnings about health changes. Reliable, global connectivity is the essential foundation for this vision.

While GPS coordinates are transmitted directly from satellite to collar, the advanced functions of SATELLAI collars require a cellular connection: AI health analysis runs in the cloud and requires permanent data transmission. Real-time notifications when leaving safety zones work via the cellular network. Software updates are also automatically deployed via the cellular connection. The smartphone app communicates with the cloud via the IoT network for notifications and data synchronization.

Currently, SATELLAI uses standard SIM cards for 4G/5G connectivity. The plan is to switch to eSIM technology, which enables even more flexible network selection. The contract with Telekom also includes NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) for energy-efficient data transmission as well as satellite connectivity for areas without cellular coverage. IoT connectivity makes additional functions possible: Software updates occur automatically via the cellular network without customers having to connect the collar to a computer.
For SATELLAI, the global reach of Telekom's infrastructure is a key factor for international expansion. The company plans market entry in Europe and the US in parallel. The collaboration illustrates a broader industry shift: from one-time hardware sales to continuous, data-driven care systems. SATELLAI doesn't just sell collars – it offers an ongoing service. Customers pay a monthly subscription for cloud-based health monitoring, AI analysis, and real-time alerts. The more data PetSense AI collects over time, the more precise its behavioral baselines and health insights become for each individual dog. This model only works with reliable, global data transmission – making IoT connectivity not just a technical requirement, but the commercial backbone of SATELLAI's business.
The collaboration between SATELLAI and Deutsche Telekom is already entering its next phase. Together, the two companies are developing an innovative, premium product that leverages Deutsche Telekom’s Precise Positioning technology. By enhancing conventional GNSS positioning with high-precision correction data, the solution significantly improves location accuracy beyond standard GNSS while remaining cost-efficient for everyday use.
For dog owners, the greatest benefit is not necessarily centimeter-level tracking, but far more reliable geofencing. Virtual boundaries can potentially be monitored with an accuracy of better than one meter, enabling alerts the moment a dog approaches the edge of a set boundary—not delayed until after reaching a street or moving beyond the property line.
The result is more reliable early notifications, greater peace of mind, and an even safer tracking experience without compromising a dog’s freedom to explore.
