Precise player tracking against football injuries

Danish startup Next11 uses sensors to measure football player workload and prevent injuries. Telekom's global IoT network ensures worldwide data transmission.

"Telekom's connectivity integration transformed our system from a beta version into a commercially competitive product. Global availability and automatic updates via mobile networks are crucial for our international expansion."

Challenge

Football injuries are increasing dramatically; muscle tears and strains in the thigh, for example, have risen 100% over the past 20 years. According to a recent study, a player gets injured on average in every seventh game across Europe's top-5 leagues. Current tracking systems measure player movements via chest straps – but this provides no insight into the actual workload on the legs. Additionally, with costs of up to €20,000, they are unaffordable for small clubs or women's teams.

Solution

Next11 places small, lightweight sensors directly in a lycra sleeve at the upper thigh of the players. Accelerometers capture all movements in three dimensions – including shots. The data is transmitted live via Bluetooth to a base station at the sideline. From there, the system sends the data via Telekom's LTE network to the cloud. Coaches can view all players' measurements live on their tablet. The system works indoors and outdoors and is also used in handball and ice hockey.

Customer benefit

Cloud synchronization allows access to data via mobile devices. Coaches recognize overexertion in real-time and can make preventive substitutions. Thanks to Telekom's global connectivity, Next11 can scale its system worldwide. Over-the-air updates via LTE enable new features to be deployed to the product.
